A wine is a bargain when it represents good value for money. And when that’s under £6 a bottle (the average price paid in the UK for a bottle of wine) and scoring the maximum 5-star review rating (outstanding) or even 4-stars (very good purchase) then you’ll want to get right on down to the supermarket to get some in.
Tesco features strongly in this week’s Top Ten Bargains (look out for the sweet tasting Casa Mana Moscatel de Valencia at just £5.35 and get ahead for Christmas) while the Co-op is coming in second with a couple of good buys (The Weather Man Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc 2022 is down a £1 to £5.75 until November 29th) and Ocado and Asda are here too.
If you’re prepared to spend a little more then get in a bottle of Tesco Ruby Port at £7.25 and feel smug that you’d normally have to pay twice the price to get the great long-lasting flavours of sweet blackberry and raisin.
They’ll be more wine bargains during the first week of December as the supermarkets try and out do each other and get your Christmas shop. Lidl’s Christmas Wine Tour will become live too (exact date not yet known) and will be a god opportunity to stock up on some unusual wines at great prices – suggestions to follow but in the mean time their New World Wine Tour is still going.

The Weather Man Fairtrade Sauvignon Blanc 2022
£5.75 Co-op (down from £6.75 until November 29th)
Great value South African Sauvignon Blanc that will please all white wine lovers with a creaminess that many will enjoy. There’s a bit of lightly toasted bread flavour going on there too which is as far removed from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc as can be. A bargain.
Calvet Limited Release Sauvignon Blanc 2021
Buy any 2 for £12 Ocado (order by November 29th)
A very nice Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc with a great balance of flavours. Fresh gooseberry and melon fruitiness with a touch of lemon sherbet and fresh cut hay. A good slurp.
£5.75 Tesco (usual price)
Great value food-friendly Italian red wine for all Italian foods. Cherry and toffee flavours with a bit of black pepper and a yoghurty sourness.
£5 Tesco (usual price)
A similar wine to Campaneo Garnacha (also £5) but lighter on the spice and more raspberry fruitiness than plum. Quaffable and good value.
The Wave Rider Sauvignon Blanc 2021
£5 Asda (usual price)
A refreshing South African Sauvignon Blanc with rich apple flavours followed by lots of lime. Good value at £5.
£4 Tesco (usual price)
This tastes like a sweetened New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with its fresh gooseberry and lime flavours that have been sprinkled with sugar. Why can’t all supermarket German Hocks tastes as good as this?
Casa Mana Moscatel de Valencia
£5.35 Tesco (usual price)
This great value sweet dessert wine tastes of Seville orange with a floral lemoniness and a touch of Early Grey tea smokiness. Complex and enjoyable. Best served chilled.
£7.25 Tesco (usual price – yes it’s over £6 but it’s a great buy for Christmas)
Underneath the Tesco label is a Port made by the famous Symington Family Estate. Although a Ruby style, the flavour is much deeper and long-lasting than this youngest category of Port might expect. Sweet blackberry and violet flavours with a raisin sweetness. The flavours persist even when the bottle has been open for a week. Great value at £7.
£4.79 Tesco (usual price)
A light and fruity Argentinean Malbec that’s great value at £4.79 a bottle. Aromas of blackberry and cherry followed by red fruit flavours enhanced by a bit of fig and cinnamon. It’s light enough to enjoy on its own or with pizza.
Co-op Irresistible Sparkling Elderflower Pressé
£2.20 Co-op (usual price)
A slightly sweet and delicately balanced elderflower sparkling drink that tastes of fresh elderflowers. No alcohol as it’s basically just fizzy sugar water and elderflower extract.
