This red wine, named after the fourteenth century new castle built for the Pope, is easy drinking with juicy cherry and milk chocolate flavours. Which is a bit of a surprise as the label describes it as being ‘rich and powerful’ and is what you’d expect from a French Rhone red made with a mix of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre (often shortened to GSM). These flavourful grape varieties can make wines that taste like tar with a little fruitiness mixed in and so the Asda Extra Special version is rather unexpectedly light – it’s still a nice wine but may not be what you thought it would be.
