Made from the Petite Sirah grape variety, you would be right in thinking this wine has something to do with the Syrah/Shiraz grape variety which produces spicy flavoured red wines. This cross-bred version produces small grapes (hence petite in the name) and is grown in warmer climates, like California where this example originates. The resulting damson and cherry flavours are sweetened with milk chocolate and caramel notes – its is a sweet wine but the sweetness is an edge to the fruitiness and not overpowering like in a Port.
