The Red label version of Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky is widely available in many supermarkets and comes in 70cl size or 1-litre. Its appeal is that it has a slightly smoky taste and so is less bland tasting than many big-name brand whiskies. Aroma is attractive but has no hint of the smoky flavour to come – expect digestive biscuits, toffee, leather new shoes, buttery, earthy and some fruity notes of apricot. Flavour is simpler – toffee, black treacle, spicy and a smoky finish. Enjoyable.
Update: Opening the bottle and consuming the contents over days or weeks will affect the flavour of the whisky as it will oxidise. After one of opening the smoky flavour had become less noticeable, after five days the smokiness had disappeared completely but the other toffee and spice flavours remain.
